Meet the Tutor
Emma Souter
Emma is an interdisciplinary practitioner and researcher with over 26 years experience working across the arts as an artist, tutor, facilitator and curator. Her works are built on a strong foundation of painting and drawing practice, spanning traditional, contemporary and process-led work.
Emma studied Art and Design, Fine Art and Interdisciplinary Arts at Central Saint Martins, Buckinghamshire University and Oxford Brookes University. Alongside her own studio practice, she has taught in a wide range of settings including further education, adult learning, community programmes, SEN provision and offender learning. Her experience includes roles with organisations such as The Manchester College, Milton Keynes College, Buckinghamshire Adult Learning, Artsmart, MIND, The British School of Upholstered Furniture and Ayres House Studios.
Teaching has always been central to Emma’s practice. Her work is informed by a long-standing interest in the cognitive and wellbeing benefits of creativity, and in fostering lifelong learning through artistic enquiry. She has supported complete beginners through to developing artists and is particularly interested in helping people overcome creative barriers—whether that’s lack of confidence, time, or access. Her approach is calm, encouraging and responsive, creating space for people to explore at their own pace without fear of judgement.
Emma’s beginner classes are designed especially for those who feel unsure about where to start, or who may not see themselves as “creative.” Sessions focus on process over outcome, helping participants reconnect with curiosity, build confidence and enjoy making without pressure.
